Welcome to the first rendition of Raw Files. Fresh from the lands kissed by the African sun, we invite you into the editing bay to experience the conversations and faces that provided the stage for our Mozambique chapter. Uncover untold stories and unseen perspectives where four friends, each from a different world, find common ground in their love for a nation steeped in rich, layered history.
For the first time, we grant you passage to the raw, unfiltered dialogues, the untold stories that almost remained in the shadows, the complete conversations that only left whispers in the final chapter.
Raw Files are our attempt to explore the depths of a story, and bring you closer to its essence brought to you by Mini Cho, Nobina Morimoto, Pedro Perino and Martin Loužecký.
Raw File - Mini Cho
Mozambique’s first professional surfer
Up and personal with Sung Min Cho, better known as Mini Cho, Mozambique’s first professional surfer. Mini’s story is fascinating. Discover how a kid from Inhambane, unfamiliar with the ocean's embrace, found solace in the waves after returning home at the age of 14.
How xenophobic attacks and economic struggles shaped his life and those around him, and why his greatest personal achievement isn’t winning contests or getting sponsored, but fostering a community and nurturing the next generation of surfers through his work at Surfers Not Street Children.
Raw File - Martin Loužecký
Owner & Founder of Skate World Better
Meet Martin Loužecký, a passionate skateboarder and visionary who turned his love for the sport into a mission to empower the youth of Mozambique. Martin, along with his local partner Francisco, has created a haven where local kids can escape, learn, and grow through the power of skateboarding and community.
A storyteller by heart, Martin knows a thing or two about navigating African bureaucracy, corruption and cultural barriers. With a team of 30 volunteers and fellow skaters, Martin, through his NGO Skate World Better, wasn’t just constructing ramps and rails, but building bridges to a brighter future for the children of Mozambique, right in the heart of Maputo.
Raw File - Pedro Perino
Professional race car driver
3 words. Humble, determined and wise (beyond his years). This pretty much sums up Pedro Perino, one of only two race car drivers from Mozambique. From the makeshift tracks of parking lots in Maputo to the illustrious circuits of the Le Mans series, Pedro's story is one of passion, resilience, and pride for his roots.
Discover the beauty and diversity of Mozambique through his eyes, and see what it’s like to break stereotypes and race against the odds to represent his nation on the global stage.
Raw File - Nobina Morimoto
Tofo Surf Club & restaurateur
Introducing Nobina Morimoto, the voice behind the cultural exploration in our Mozambique chapter. Born in Singapore to Japanese parents, Nobina found her home in Mozambique, where she delves deep into the rich tapestry of local traditions, languages, and lifestyles.
As the administrator of Tofo Surf Club, a Surfers Not Street Children offshoot diversion program, she guides local kids and teenagers through societal pitfalls and offering them a sense of belonging and purpose through surfing and mentorship.
Beyond her role in mentorship, she’s a pioneering restaurateur, running a renowned Japanese restaurant in Inhambane, where she breaks cultural barriers through culinary artistry.
Her journey is a symphony of passion, resilience, and altruism, as she empowers the youth of Mozambique through surfing.
